Things to Consider when Buying a Snorkel
What do you need a snorkel for? The answer to this question determines what type of snorkel to buy. If you are not aware of it, snorkels are designed for different purposes. The snorkel designed for scuba diving is not the best for snorkeling, and this is true the other way around.
Choose the best snorkeling snorkel if that is what you intend to use it for. Dry snorkels are very popular. This means that water does not enter the snorkel. Water will not enter the snorkel even if a big wave goes over you or even if you give under water. This means that you don’t have to get the water out to breathe. Ideal for snorkeling is a dry snorkel that is not big and bulky. Ideally, one should choose a dry snorkel that is low profile, or not big and bulky. If the snorkel is big, it weighs enough and will cause drag in the waters that they can pull on the mask strap where they are fastened to and make your mask leak. When you mask fits perfectly and then you find it leaking, it will definitely cause frustration in you. By taking the snorkel off the mark, your mask will no longer leak. When this happens this means that your snorkel is big and bulky.
You should find a snorkel that attaches to the mask strap with a good system. Sliding the snorkel up and down and side to side on the mask strap is possible with a good strap system. Your mask strap then will not be pulled when you put your snorkel in your mouth comfortably.
You should take extra care when purchasing a snorkel with many special features. There are snorkel features such as a dry top, 2 purges, and a flex tube mouthpiece that may be beneficial, but these are designed for heavy bulky snorkels. You can’t have a low profile snorkel with all these features. It is alright to purchase a snorkel with many features as long as you know what you are getting and the possible drawbacks.
A snorkel for scuba diving is also important. You sometimes need a snorkel when you surface after scuba diving so you don’t struggle on the water. It is possible to run out of air while you are still away from the dive boat. But, if you have a snorkel you can simply swim back to the boat. A snorkel will also help preserve air in your tank while on the surface. With more air in your tank, you can dive more under water.
For scuba diving, a low profile snorkel is ideal. The snorkel should be a small one so it does not disturb your face since it drops comfortably to the side when not in use.
